Go here (http://www.games.seantcooper.com/) and navigate to Flash Examples->3D Sphere Mapping. This was done in flash and looks as good as shockwave.

Your flash example looks better than andre-michelle’s, but is not even close to the shockwave one.
Don’t try to fool yourself: flash cannot compete with shockwave in Web 3D projects.
