FL909 attempts to simulate the original sound of the Roland TR-909. This drumcomputer hits the market 1984 and was a long time the state of art in house and techno productions. Shift-Click the Step-buttons for accent triggers. Shift-Click-Move knobs for smoother resolution. Press Save to store a snapshot of the current settings to a flash cookie. Restore snapshot by pressing Load. Clear to delete all patterns and reset all knobs. Drag and drop a pattern button (invisible) to copy a pattern to a new location.

I really enjoyed giving this a go, I came up with rhythms that I probably wouldn’t have done with my DAW, just because of the user interface of the 909. The shuffle has a great groove to it.

Scoots.

John wrote...

This is great. There are few 909 VST plugins out there but this one is the best. Make it VST please?

Chaduke wrote...

When you ask to make this into a VST plugin its not some simple task like copying the code over to another program and pressing a button.

This 909 sequencer was written in Actionscript for the Flash platform as a stand alone program.

VST plugins are normally coded in C++, use the Steinberg SDK and are compiled as Windows dlls to be used with a VST host application. Its an entirely different realm altogether.

John wrote...

Sorry I really have no clue of what is involved. I thought perhaps it’s just a matter of adding a midi function somehow using something like Synthedit.
But I like the FL-909. It doesn’t sound exactly like TR-909 but it has a particular character which makes it just as good (in my opinion). Also the drum tuning is great. DIfferent but I like what it does. Too bad it can’t be made VStI easyily. But yeah you did very fine job on it evenin it’s format.

I guess this is the most user-friendly drummachine ever. I understand it’s a lot of work to convert it to VSTi, so at least we’be got Rebirth for free. This is better than the machine in Rebirth though :)

Zimbabalim wrote...

Absolutely brilliant. You are a scary guy! What I’d really like to know is how you managed to get the timing so tight? for my little machine I’ve been using the getTimer method; but I reckon I have better timing drunk! I’ve looked through your source but can’t figure out what makes it tick, so to speak. Any hints easy to relate?

Greg wrote...

Can you make this into a Audio Unit for Logic Pro? This would be utterly sweet to write with! Very very very cool! I have an old CR-78 and love the vibe of it, but there are some real pain in the a– sync issues that make it more of a hassle than a pleasure to use. I’m not sure how that would work, but looks like you have the skills! Great work!

Viz wrote...

Awesome! The only complaint I could have is that it’s a little small, but that’s really a non-issue. It does get a little laggy every now and then, but I guess that’s to be expected. Got linked to this, and checked out the rest of your site. Lots of cool stuff going on here!

Hi Etienne, your Archos might be running Flash lite (for mobile devices). The maestro put this together with ActionScript3 which is only fully supported in the big FP9. I’m sure Andre could whip up a Flash lite version while he is developing the VSTi, AU and ZX Spectrum versions!!!

This is beautiful.. It feels like you resurrected the phoenix of the Oldskool Roland Synth series.. (or Rebirth for that matter..) speaking of ‘Rebirth’ (from propellerheads) I can’t imagine if one would take further steps to create a virtual studio rack ensemble (almost like Reason, Rebirth or Storm) and create a flash or AIR release with the juicy tidbits of more juicy virtual-analog synths, effects, etc..

Keep it up! The beat goes on!

Would be nice if you could press a button which would tell a backend script to create an .mp3 of your pattern. Then you are redirected to a URL where you can download the MP3 for the pattern you just created. The best user experience would be if you could choose between cutting, leaving, or looping the fade-out (as you can in FL studio)
